Hello Erin, Thank you for sending in this pocket watch to mearto.com for an appraisal. I shall try to help you with that tonight. TITLE: Gent’s, gold plated (gold filled/gold tone), pendant set, quartz, savonette, hunting case pocket watch with day and date functions, dial marked Andre Philippe, Switzerland, circa 1980s. Accompanied by the jewelry box marked Andre Philippe. DESCRIPTION: Case: 44 mm diameter, four leaf, gold tone hunting case pocket watch with two outer covers, both engine-turned covers are made in a circular pattern with machine engraved foliate designs and one outer cover has a shield-shaped cameo for the owners’ initials. There is a fluted suppressed ball pendant and rounded bow placed at the three position (savonette) opposite the case hinge. The interior of the covers carry no gold markings. Dial: round enameled dial with breguet type Arabic hours, open bar minute track, day of week/day of month in a rectangular aperture @3 (in Spanish), steel spade hands with center sweep seconds pointer. The dial is marked Andre Philippe above and swiss quartz below. Movement: Most likely a swiss made quartz movement made during the quartz era in Switzerland from 1970 through the early 1990s. Not shown and therefor not described. The company was formed in 1986 in Switzerland. Condition: The case - In relatively good condition with some wear to the inside with scratches and the outer case apparently having a high copper metal content judging from the color. No major damage here. Dial - The dial is in good condition as well. The name Andre Philippe tells the story. Andre Philippe is known watchmaking company in Switzerland. It was formed in 1986 and did not last until the turn of the century. The created name is a play on Adrien Philippe, a true watchmaker who was part of the Patek Philippe watch company in Switzerland and the created name suggests to a buyer that this is a watch in some manner related to Patek Philippe. It is all just a play on the name. We do know this Swiss watch company existed for a few years in the late 1980s and was founded in 1986, but they are very inexpensively made and generally sell in the 2-figure dollar range. Movement – not evaluated since it is not shown but assumed to be a non-specific swiss quartz movement. Pricing: Generally, these watches sell in the $65 and under range, many for $25+/- range.
