Hello Aarron, I’m very glad that you chose Mearto for your online appraisal, Considering the photographs, overall pattern, knot density and the colours, I concluded that this is an Entirely Hand Knotted Khal Mohammadi Afghan Rug. The piece dates back to the period from 2000 to 2005. The Khal Mohammadi design is a sets and types of designs dating back to 1960's. Most Khal Mohammadi rugs are woven in or around the town of Kunduz in north of Afghanistan just like this piece of yours. The colours are dark, usually deep reds with dark blue or black used for detail. The colour and dyes themselves are what give the rug its name, it was Khal Mohammadi who developed the red tones found in these rugs. These are usually knotted by the Turkmans of the area, therefore the knots are symmetrical knots. The piece is knotted wool on wool with the local Belgiun Wool. The piece is centrally decorated with a central medallion. The medallion is very dominative in the central area with floral extensions and surroundings. There are caterpillar like motifs on the sides of the medallion constructed by floral leaves. Warm tones are very usual to see in these pieces. The piece's borders are decorated with Persian style leaves and flower patterns. The piece appears to be in good condition without any visible faults. Entirely hand knotted. Dimensions: 6 Feet 10 Inches by 4 Feet 10 Inches Condition: The piece appears to be in good condition without any visible faults. Provenance: Current owner's brother purchased this piece from country of origin in the early 2000's when he was stationed there during his first tour in Afghanistan. Heavily decorated by Khal Mohammadi patterns. 400-800$. Please don’t hesitate to reach us again for more online appraisals on your precious items, thank you for choosing Mearto.
