18” Peasant Cloth Dolls
25 August 2020
Description

My wife and I have had this pair in our collection for quite some time and we know nothing about them. They measure approximately 18” tall and both have wooden shoes. When we purchased these years ago at auction, they were listed as circa 1920s peasant dolls. After researching what they could be, we think they are similar to either Yvonne Spaggiari Giordano and/or Bernard Ravca type dolls. However, we have yet to find any markings on either of them.

What does this mean?

Dear Cliff,

Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry. So that I may best assist you, can you please describe to me what the heads are made of? It looks as if it is moulded cloth that has been painted with oilpaint however it is hard to tell from the photos.

Thanks

The heads look to have a thin type of cloth on the outside. I’ve uploaded several photos.

There are no visible markings on the bodies or clothes.

Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.

It is a lovely couple of cloths dolls. Such vintage dolls are being offered at auction on a regular basis.
I have compared your dolls with dolls by Yvonne Spaggiari Giordano and Bernard Ravca dolls and I agree that they are very similar. And if they were to be sold you would definitely describe them as being Yvonne Spaggiari Ravca type sockette dolls. From the photos they appear to be in good condition with some signs of wear and use but not too much. These dolls were probably made in the late 1920s-1930s in Italy.
I believe that the couple would attract the attention of both collectors and dealers if it came up for auction.
The estimate provided is for a well-advertised specialised online toys auction, where I believe the dolls has the best chance of realising its fullest potential. However, there is no measurement for the sentimental value you might attach to the Yvonne Spaggiari Ravca type dolls. Retail "asking prices" can be higher and vary.

Please let me know if you have any additional questions. I’m happy to help.
Thank you
