Wine or liquor Decanter and 4 glasses
30 May 2019
Description

The decanter and glasses are clear green with gold inlay. There are flowers and scripting that are raised on the glass. The decanter is 9 1/4 tall without the cap and 4 in around at the widest point. The cap is 3 3/4 long. The glasses match the decanter. They are 3 in tall and 1 3/4 at the mouth. There is a marking on the bottom and it looks like there might be a flaw or a marking on the cap. I bought this at a garage sale maybe 25 years ago and it has been in a box ever since.

What does this mean?

Good afternoon, James,

Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry. I can not make out the mark on the decanter's stopper. The mark on the underside does not look like a flaw but part of the hand-making process. Based on the information and photographs provided, and subject to examination, this is:

A Venetian hand-painted blown green glass claret decanter set,
Italian, late 19th/early 20th century
With four matching claret glasses
Decanter: 13 inches overall height
Glasses: 3 inches overall height
$150-200

Please let us know if you have additional items to appraise, and thank you for using Mearto.

Can you tell me the makers mark on the bottom that looks like a horse or whatever?

Delia May 31, 23:01 UTC

I've looked at the photos of the mark and they aren't clear enough - is it possible for you to upload a clearer photo?

James mulder May 31, 23:30 UTC

I added 3 more photos. Thanks.

I've looked again. I do not think it is a mark but instead is what is referred to as a 'pontil scar', the mark the tool used to blow the glass made when it was cut off of the finished product.

OK. thanks but it's definitely and intentionally installed mark not a pontil scar.

I think I have been scammed. My password doesn't even open the site.

I've checked all of the marks for this kind of glass and don't see anything. I can't in good conscience make a specific attribution and I've handled glass like this for more than 25 years. Let me know if you still can't open the site.
