What does this mean?

Dear Don,

Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.

The presented object appears to be a painting made in oil paint on canvas with the measurements of 31-1/2x15-3/4. The painting depicts a Dutch or Flemish landscape and was signed with the name "V. Bos". This painting was made in the second third of the 20th century. It was not made by the suggested artist Georges VAN DEN BOS (1853-1911) who paints in better quality and is totally different in his style. Sadly no fitting artist in style, signature, and motif is mentioned in reference books and databases.
This piece is in good condition and there are no serious damages visible.
An estimation would be between 100 to 150 USD.
This estimation is based on actual recent past recorded auction sales of comparables. Retail "asking prices" can be higher and vary.

With kind regards,
Georg

Georg, I'm confused by two things in your appraisal. You say this artist is in no reference books or databases. Then you say artworks by this artist were offered in the international and national auction markets. How do you know this if nothing appears in any databases? But most importantly, you say this painting was created in the 2nd third of the 20th century or 1933 to 1966. I bought this painting in 1968 and there is no doubt is was already many decades old. Look at the canvas edge on the signature photo I sent you. I'd like to send one of the frame and back of the painting if you will allow me. If you saw and held this painting in person you would absolutely know it is much much older than you are claiming. Would love to see the paintings by this artist you are referring to as sold at other auctions. Do you have any further info on them? Don Lilly

Dear Don,

Thank you for your email. The sentence was from another appraisal. Excuse my mistake. I changed it in the text.
The style of the painting and the style of the signature are quite common for 1930 to 1940s. So it was more probably made in this area, but it is thinkable that it was made in the 1920s.
This painting was made by a not academical educated artist as you can see at the problems with the perspective and the color perspective. Also, this artist used too much paint that caused to crackle. That means there are no other comparables.

With kind regards,
Georg
