Set of 10 (one is very damaged) Washington rose colored three cent stamps..all connected...unused
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry. Based on the photographs and description provided, the subject of this appraisal is a partial sheet of ten unused United States Classic Issue Three Cent postage stamps (Scott #26, Type II) circa 1857 to 1861.
One of the stamps is in poor condition with a significant amount of tearing that has resulted in a missing area across Washington's face. The tear extends across two additional stamps, and another stamp has a slight amount of paper loss across the bottom edge. Based on the photographs examined, one stamp is in poor condition, three are in average condition, and the remaining six would be estimated in fine condition.
For information about identifying these stamps, https://www.stamp-collecting-world.com/usclassicstamps_1857.html has a fantastic write-up on identifying these stamps. Based on the photographs, the stamps show side frame lines that extend continuously down the entire length of the sheet, aiding in the identification as Type II stamps.
Estimated value based on market prices for these stamps would be approximately $15 for the average condition stamps, and $25 for the fine condition stamps, and would result in a total estimated value of approximately $200. If original gum remains on the rear of the stamps, an additional premium would be given to the value. In consideration of the factors noted, a Fair Market Value (pre-auction estimate) of this piece would be estimated at $200 to $300.
