What does this mean?

Hello, thank you for submitting an inquiry for appraisal. This is a folk carved and painted Windsor-style lowback armchair. In this example the carved figures take the place of more traditional turned elements and this may be a singular or unique example (in other words, this is not a common adaptation.) The style of the dress suggests a Northern European manufacture. While the style of the legs and overall form was made as early as the 18th Century, beginning in England, this is probably a late 19th or 20th century example. From the grain of the seat, it looks as though it is made from some species of pine, though the legs, carved figures and back could be made from other types of wood, as was common. I hope this has been helpful; please let us know if you have additional questions.
