Two paintings, oil on board
24 September 2020
Description

These two paintings were bought together at a secondhand shop in Tennessee. Dimensions for both frames is 14 1/2" x 21", dimensions for both paintings is 12 3/4" x 18 1/2". The material of the paintings seems to be oil on some kind of composite board, almost like hard cardboard. The board is painted blue on the back side. The frame seems to be made of a material lighter than wood, but is painted to look like wood and metal. From the damage, it looks like it was originally white. Edit: I want to say that I am not an expert on these things, just a casual collector. I am not looking to sell, I'm just very curious about this pair. Even if you don't have the name of the artist, I would love insight into when it could have been painted or any kind of history surrounding it.

What does this mean?

Hi Shelby,

Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
I can make out "S. Lew.." in the photo of the signature - there are too many artists whose name that could be but the landscape at least looks European to me, which the marine picture could be as well. Given that they are the same size and were sold together, these would be best described as:

European or Continental school, late 19th Century
Two paintings, one a painting of a large house in a landscape, the other a bay with ships
both oil on board; one with a label fragment verso
each 18 1/2 by 12 3/4 inches; framed 21 by 14 1/2 inches
one signed indistinctly "S.Lew..." lower right
PROVENANCE: purchased at a second-hand shop in Tennessee
each $200-300 or $400-600 for the pair*
