What does this mean?

Dear Shelby,

Greetings and thank you for submitting photos of this lovely sculpture to Mearto. I have a couple of questions for you which will help me complete your evaluation. First, do you know which state or country your father acquired this piece in? Second, would I be correct in assuming that to the best of your knowledge this piece is not signed by the artist?

I look forward to assisting you.

Sincerely,

Erin-Marie

He acquired it in Tulsa Oklahoma in a one of the most prominent neighborhoods. I have not yet located an artist’s mark but I will look again this evening.

Thank you Shelby,

It's possible that there isn't one but if there is your evaluation could increase dramatically.

Sincerely,

Erin-Marie

The only possibility are some marks by the feet that may be deliberate but I am not sure. The material is very porous with many voids in the material. I’ll upload photos of the possible “marks”.

Dear Shelby,

Your dad has a great eye, this standing figurative sculpture made from volcanic lava rock is beautifully carved and is reminiscent of the sculpture of British artist, Henry Moore. In my opinion this piece was likely carved in Hawaii, circa 1950s but lava carvings have also been made in South America and Asia.

Because we cannot attribute this piece to a specific artist it must be approached as and compared to the sales of decorative figurative sculptures carved from similar material. As such, if it were offered at auction, I would expect it to sell conservatively in the range of $300 to $450.

If you have any follow-up questions, I am at your service.

Sincerely,

Erin-Marie
