Stained Glass lamp
22 November 2020
Description

This is a large very heavy table lamp. The base is very heavy and has gone green a bit on the underside. I don't know the material. The shade is also heavy but I can't tell the material as it feels almost waxy(?) not like glass and when I try to ring it it is like a piece of plastic almost but not really. I can't tell if the shade really belongs with the base because the base seems oriental like to me. The shade is very odd shaped and has four sides to it and is sort of scalloped at the top. It doesn't have any cracked or broken pieces but could probably do with a clean. I just don't clean it other than with a feather duster so I wont break it. Also what is weird is when the light is on the colour shines through the outside but doesn't on the inside. I think the lighbulb holder is modern. Can you tell me how old it might be and who may have made it and how much I could sell it for. Thanks so much

What does this mean?

Hi Laura,

Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
These lamps were extremely popular from the late 19th century through the mid 20th Century, when yours was most likely made. Unless they are marked (in a discrete place, usually underneath the base or along the rim), it's almost impossible to know who made them. The shade looks like it could have gone with the base, at least the style is characteristic and the proportions look good. If I could examine this in person, I would look closely at how the top attaches to the base to see if there are gaps or any other signs that these were not originally made at the same time, for each other (in the trade, we call that a marriage of parts).
Unattributed lamps don't bring a great amount at auction and there is a large number of attributed lamps on the market of similar price. That said, if you find a name or maker's mark, please let me know and I'll see if the appraised value needs to be amended.
If you'd like this appraisal to include dimensions, which is typical, please forward the height, width and depth at your convenience and I'll update this ASAP.
Based on the photos and information provided, and subject to examination, this is:

An Art Nouveau style leaded slag glass and brass table lamp
American or English, mid 20th Century
The flaring leaded slag-glass shade of diamond section with turtle-back tile and flourishes, the shaped pierced cast brass scrolling base on domed foot.
