St. Joseph
21 October 2018
Description

hand carved 15th-16th century 5'3" plaster over solid wood effigy of St. Joseph=husband of Mary........I was told it originated in Rotterdam from a church or cathedral...he is notched out in the back to be affixed to a beam. He is missing the flowers or carpenter's square that he held in his hand....obviously he has had some cosmetic restoration...however,I believe him to be at least 98% original.

Provenance

I purchased it from a friend who's mother purchased it from a WW2 general's estate in 1970's

What does this mean?

Dear Linda,

Thank you for your request. The apprised object is a life-sized sculpture of an evangelist or saint made in the late 19th or 20th century. It depicts a standing saint holding a book or bible and the second attribute in his right hand. It is more possible that this saint is one of the evangelists because of the bible then St. Joseph. This sculpture was restored with new colors in the 20th century.
This piece is in good condition and there are no serious damages visible.
An estimation would be between 800 to 1500 USD.
This estimation is based on actual recent past recorded auction sales of comparables. Retail "asking prices" can be higher and vary.

With best regards,
Georg

it was appraised in 1970's for insurance purposes at 10K....yes I realize 20th century restoration......but it certainly is MUCH older than 19th-20th century...I guess it requires a hands on valuation....thank you for your time

Dear Linda,

Older sculptures and carvings have differences in the structure of the carving and the construction of the figurine itself. Wood moves and tears with the centuries. To prevent that a massive wooden sculpture like this cracks they are usually concaved deeply at their back. Here is just a recess probably for fixation to the wall. Also, you can see in this area the wood which is a pine wood. Old sculptures are not made out of pine wood.

With kind regards,
Georg
