Springfield model 1870 with 1863 date on it
06 September 2021
Description

Stayed model 1870 with eagle head with arrows behind sight. Looks like some oval markings on the wood before the wooden stock. It is marked 1863 pin the plate directly above the trigger. There seems to be some markings on the same plate just below the hammer head, to much black oxidizing to make out the markings. Rifle is approx 52” long from tip of barrel to tip of the stock. There is a groove that runs along the bottom of the wood that runs along the barrel. Seems to be for a ram rod, but it is missing. There are two oval shoulder strap rings. One on the trigger guard and one about seven inches from the tip of the barrel.there is a sight, but seems to be broken. There seems to be some type of numbers or writing just above the first screw on the left side of the gun. Black oxidation makes it hard to read. There may be other markings that can’t be seen.

What does this mean?

Dear William,

Thank you for your patience and help. My sincere apologies for the delay with the appraisal.

The presented object appears to be a Springfield M 1863 rifle with a total length of 53 inches. The rifle is stamped Model 1870 and the lockplate is stamped 1863. The ramrod is missing. Probably the part tamped 1870 is a later addition.
Comparable objects were recently offered and sold on the international auction market.
This piece is in bad to medium condition and there is no serious damage visible in the images provided.
A fair market estimation would be between 250 to 500 USD.
This estimate is based on actual recent past recorded auction sales of comparable items. Retail "asking prices" can be higher and may vary.

With kind regards,

George

George, I am traveling right now and will not have access to the rifle until Saturday 10/16/21. I will see what photos I can take and upload at that time, however, I do believe that the pics I already uploaded have all the markings that are visible.
Thanks.
Will Holmes.
