Small bronze plate Asian
20 June 2021
Description

This is a small, seemingly handmade, bronze (?) plate. Writing on top and decorative on the bottom. Lettering is worn on what I believe to be the bottom as if it is possibly an offering or prayer plate? It is 5 7/16”x 5 9/16” the dimensions vary to some degree width and height wise.

Provenance

I inherited from my father. He may have acquired it in Japan or China as he lived in both places in the 1940’s.

What does this mean?

Thank you for contacting Mearto. In researching your piece, I came across an identical one. I have linked to it below and contacted the auction house that is selling it. I am awaiting a response and will get back to you. I am hoping they can give us more information and possibly an idea of why there are two of these, and whether yours would be worth the same, since the condition is different. In the meantime, let me know if I can be of further assistance. For now, I am estimating the value in line with theirs.

Hi again,

I got this response:

"Thanks for your email. As you likely know, the Freeman’s lot failed to sell when offered. Unfortunately, I don’t think the casting quality of either dish would be high enough for us to offer at auction at this point in time.
Sincerely, Ben Farina"

I replied and asked if he could give me a general idea of value, but I haven't received a response yet.

Regardless, I was able to find even more of these exact plates and sale prices. The highest price was $3250 for one that was gilt. The lowest was $120 for one in poor condition. Most were $300 to $400. I wrote to the house that sold the expensive one to see if they could tell me more about it or are interested in yours.
