Description

This is a gorgeous piece in terms of the wood. It is a different type of burl. There seem to be burl touches used as framing or a border for Mahogany. The insides of the drawers are the deepest mahogany. There are interesting feet and it appears the piece has the original key and hardware. The condition is good. The dimensions are 40 inches high by 32.5 inches wide by 29 inches from the desk to the floor and 14.25 inches deep.

What does this mean?

Hi Rhonda,

Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
The whirled grain on the back looks like knotty pine to me; the rest of this is a lovely flame mahogany.
Based on the photos and information provided, and subject to examination, this is:

A vintage Georgian style flame mahogany fall-front escritoire
American or English, first half 20th Century
The rectangular top over a hinged molded edged lid opening to reveal a divided writing surface, over a long drawer, all raised on tall cylindrical legs joined by a shelf stretcher, on trestle feet. With knotty pine backboard.
40 inches tall, 32 1/2 inches wide, 14 1/4 inches deep
CONDITION: appears to be in good condition with some
PROVENANCE: acquired at a neighborhood store
$500-800*
*represents a fair-market value for auction purposes; retail or asking price may vary.

Please let us know if you have additional items to appraise, and thank you again for using Mearto.

Hello Delia:
I like this desk (escritoire), :) a lot. Thank you for the information. I am always amazed that there is no identifying mark on a piece like this. Does it mean it was not mass produced? And, with such beautiful wood, why would someone affix a rough piece of knotty pine to the back. Seems incongruous to the rest of the piece.
Thank you for your quick work. Someone, somewhere is going to love this.
