10" X 7 3/4" bronze cross with Amida Nyorai seated in meditation on a bed of lotus petals , showing a Nikkei (usnisa) on top of his head. A circle with 4 projecting fleur-de-lis connects the 4 points of the cross. At the center of the back of the cross is a quatrefoil (representing the 4 Evangelists). This cross was openly used by Christians, being persecuted for their faith in Japan beginning around 1639, by substituting the figure of the Buddha for Christ in the center of the front of cross. A similar example can be found in the Museo Oriental de Valladolid in Spain datable to the 18th Century.
Purchased at an antique shop in the old Sanno Hotel in Tokyo in 1973. No information on its provenance.
