1900's S&W pistol with a pearl handle. Box with return address, "The American Committee for Defense of British Homes" addressed to my great grandfather. Family story is that the gun and a Winchester Rifle (I also have the rifle) were sent to be used in Great Britain in WW2.

Provenance

My great grandfather answered the NRA call to send guns to Britain after Dunkerk. It was returned to him after the war.

What does this mean?

Dear John,

Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry. So that I may best assist you, can you please upload a few better images of the serial number which is stamped on every part of this revolver.

With kind regards,
Georg

The only number I found is on the wheel. While I assume the gun itself has some value, the historic significance of the piece and its known provenance must add to the value. Thanks.

Dear John,

Thank you for your additional information and patience.

The presented object appears to be a 32 DA Third Model revolver made by Smith & Wesson with grips made out of mother of pearl. It has probably a 32 caliber and was made in the late 19th century.
This piece is in good condition and there are no serious damages visible.
An estimation would be between 300 to 500 USD.
This estimation is based on actual recent past recorded auction sales of comparables. Retail "asking prices" can be higher and vary.

With kind regards,
Georg

You did not take into account the historical nature of the piece at all?

George Dec 03, 09:52 UTC

Dear John,

Thank you for your email. The estimate is adapted to actual reached hammer prices of comparable pieces. The story behind this revolver does not really increase the estimate. There were many small arms that were sent to Great Britain or other allied countries.

With kind regards,
Georg
