Description

Royal Dux Bohemia- Angel on Clam Shell. 21cm base width,32cm base length and 25cm height. The letter E is impressed in the centre of the unglazed pink triangle, stamped with made in Czechoslovakia in blue print and imprinted with the numbers 2431 on base. I was told by family member that the item was brought out from England in the 1800's which indicates first period Dux 1800's-WWl but with the imprinted "Made in Czechoslovakia", perhaps the item is 2nd period 1919-WWll.

Provenance

My Aunt who inherited the item from her mother who had inherited from her mother.

Dear Victoria,

Thank you for your request. The presented object is a porcelain a porcelain shell with the measurements of 25 cm height and 32 cm length. It shows an angel or Amor sitting on the top of a clam. This piece is marked by Royal Dux Bohemia and has the model number 2481. The red triangle hallmark was in use between 1900 and 1918. This piece is also stamped with "Made in Czechoslovakia" which could just happen after 1918. Possibly this piece was produced in the years after the foundation of Czechoslovakia in 1918 and under the usage of older models.
This piece is in good condition and there are no serious damages visible.
An estimation would be between 100 to 200 USD.
This estimation is based on actual recent past recorded auction sales of comparables. Retail "asking prices" can be higher and vary.

With best regards,
Georg

Hi Georg,
Thankyou for your time in valuating my beautiful piece of Royal Dux but you state that "the red triangle hallmark was in use between 1900 and 1918". I beg to differ your opinion as I did my own research into Royal Dux a few months ago and printed an article by Mark Chevenka titled "Royal Dux: Dating 150 Years of Porcelain. He stated that the red triangle made from pink clay was in fact applied whether from the 19th, 20th or 21st century, not just limited to between 1900 and 1918. And also states that "vintage 19th century Royal Dux are selling for up to several thousand dollars". Have I been misguided by this article?

Dear Victoria,

Thank you for the hint to this interesting article. I am working in the field of art trade in Germany since years and we have because of the short topographic distance many porcelain pieces of Royal Dux. The dating makes just sense after 1918 because of the "Made in Czechoslovakia" stamp. The Czech Republic was founded in 1918 after the breakdown of the Austria-Hungary Empire after the WWI. The named estimate is a base auction estimate. It is possible and desirable that it could reach a higher price in an auction, but sadly not in the category you named. Porcelain pieces like this are more or less mass-produced and still available on the market. I hope I answered your question.

With kind regards,
Georg
