Royal cameo. 1275
15 February 2019
Description

I dont have it with me but happy to provide dimensions when I have it on me. The photos is all I have. No damage at all and it seems to have no tarnish either. It was kept locked up. It has a reflective material and the head appears to be silver. Definitely very old

Provenance

Grandfather who got it from a much older lady years and years ago. I know it's very very old from what I'm told. The lady had it for many decades and like I said she mentioned she recieved it from a royal. Not sure what it is. I would love to see if anyone knows anything. I do not have much information except it seems to be made from something else that a cameo normally isnt made from. It's very shiny. Has the imprint 1275 on the back. I was told by my grandfather that it was given to him by a women from malta who's said she recieved it from the royals of England

What does this mean?

Thank you for submitting your item for appraisal. This necklace is composed by a chain and a round shaped pendant, both in white metal. The pendant has a white metal frame which is surrounding a black glossy material. In the middle of the black slide there is a three-dimensional female face in profile which is also in white metal and it remembers the traditional design of a cameo. The black material appears like an opaque glass slice, since there is no evidence of color gradient on any of the sides. The pendant is stamped "1275" on its back, which is not a known hallmark. Observing the pictures, the metal looks a shiny silver color, not tarnished. According the color of the metal and the general aspect of the item, it is probably made in alpaca silver, an alloy of copper, nickel and sometimes zinc or iron. Alpaca silver is also known as German silver and it has been used for since the 1823. Analyzing the photographs, it is probable that the object dates back to the Victorian era.
