Dear Gene,

Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry and I wish you a Happy New Year 2021. my sincere apologies for the delay with the appraisal. So that I may best assist you, can you please upload detailed and focused images of all hallmarks, numbers, and stamps on the metal parts of the weapon? Thank you for your help.

With kind regards,
Georg

Hi
Georg, I tried to take a photo but the numbers, stamps, etc. are so faint I could barely make them out under intense direct light with a magnifying glass. Is there a trick to make them more pronounced & visible?

Dear Gene,

Thank you for your help. Perhaps it is easier when you describe what you see. It is sometimes really difficult to get these stamps focused photographed.

With kind regards,
Georg

Dear Georg,

I've done some research & am going to try a solution of copper chloride dihydrate, hydrogen chloride, & water to see if it will make the letters & numbers clear enough to photograph.
Thanks for working with me,
Gene

Dear Gene,

I recommend not to use such etching chemicals. Is it possible for you to read those letters with your eye and write them down?

All the best,
Georg

Dear Georg, I have a new hi intensity light so I'll give it a try. My impression was that you needed the letters & numbers in a photo. Thanks for your continued assistance!

Hello Georg, Even with hi-intensity light & magnifying glass, I can't get a decent picture. Here are the words & letters I've been able to make out on the barrel. Sure about "Remington Arms" , "Nov 21 1911", & "Apr 16 19" but not sure about the rest. Remington Arms Union MCT Works Elon NY Nov 21 1911 Apr 16 19 (can't make out last 2 digits). This is the best I can do.
Hope it's enough to help. Got my 1st Covid shot & feeling fine. Hope you & yours are well! Gene

Dear Gene,

Thank you very much for your help. I hope you tolerated the first shot well and happy to hear that you are healthy. This rifle is still a bit miraculous. It is a muzzleloading percussion lock rifle with a curly maple stock. The stamp "Remington Arms Union MCT Works" and the year 1911 indicate that this rifle was made in the 20th century when the percussion lock was technical old fashioned and not in military use anymore. This indicates that this rifle was made as a replica and memory for the rifle production of Remington in the 19th century. It is not comparable to the most known types of Remington like Model 1941 or Model 1863.
This piece is in medium condition and there is no serious damage visible in the images provided.
A fair market estimation would be between 150 to 400 USD.
This estimate is based on actual recent past recorded auction sales of comparable items. Retail "asking prices" can be higher and may vary.

With kind regards,
Georg

Dear Georg, Thanks for your patience while I tried to get as much info as possible off the rifle. Your conclusion that it is a replica makes perfect sense. We were hoping we had the "real thing" but now we know. Thank you for your help. Be safe & stay healthy!

Best wishes,
Gene
