Description

Post 19th century formal black silk robe. The black of the formal robe, shows off the colorful embroideries very well.Simple constructed coat with opening the entire length at the front and slits on the sides. It has silk loops that are attached by gold colored buttons representing dragons. The robe is covered with a variety of satin stitched embroidered symbols, butterflies, various insects, each of a unique designs and in various patterns. The silk thread colors used are a rainbow of bright and vibrant colors. A black silk rope edging frames the opening at the neck. There is a bright blue silk lining on the inside. There are no marks or paper labels. Robe measures four feet from neck to bottom of legging and twenty nine inches from middle of neck opening to long end of sleeve. CONDITION: The robe is in excellent condition with the exception of material separation near the neck, along the sleeve which looks like it happened during a period of hanging on display prior to my fathers purchase.

Provenance

It was brought back from Japan at the end of World War II by my father and has been stored in a chest all these years and has not seen the sunlight.

Thank you for submitting your item for appraisal. This appears to be a black silk robe decorated with a hundred butterflies, buddhist treasures and the character "shou" for long life. The butterfly represents long life among other positive meanings according to chinese beliefs. The estimate is based on similar items offered or sold at auction. There is no measurement for the sentimental value you might attach to it.
