Description

A water colour portrait of an Edwardian lady on Winsor and Newton Sketching Board.30 cm x 35 cm. Mount and backing board,No Frame.

Provenance

There is no artist signature visible but It says on the back Jessie Brown married George Alexander Touche June 4th 1887.He was a Baronet and is in the National Portrait Gallery. The portrait I have looks early 20th century, unfortunately the artists signature could be under the mount which is stuck to the picture. The backing board which is ply has W.M.Power of London's stamp on.I bought it from a charity shop in Bristol roughly 15 years ago.I thought it was a really good print but I have just moved it to New Zealand with me and realized it is actually a really good original.

What does this mean?

This is more likely a 'painting' that was created from a photograph, which was a common practice in the late 19th through early 20th centuries. Extreme close-ups of the surface would be helpful to see the surface texture. In general, portrait photos are less desirable on the market than non-commissioned works. The estimate is based on actual recent past recorded auction sales of comparables. Retail 'asking prices' can be higher and vary.
