porcelain doll
03 December 2020
Description

This doll was made in Germany and has an A. Bouchet mark on the back of the head. We believe the doll is about 100 years old because it belonged to my grandmother's sister and she was young when she received it. She stands about 28 inches tall. She was found naked in an attic. The clothes were made in 1980 along with being "restrung" and having the hair made to look nice again. She is missing a finger on one hand and the left leg comes off at the knee.

Provenance

The doll was given to my grandmother's sister when she was young. We think around the age of 7 which would make it about 100 years old.

What does this mean?

Dear Diane,

Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.

The presented object appears to be a bisque porcelain head doll with moveable sleeping eyes and a probable celluloid body. The head is marked with AB, the model number 1362, and "Made in Germany. The identification of the AB mark is questionable. This doll was not produced by SFBJ because of . Adolphe Bouchet, Bru Jne et Cie, Fleischmann & Bloedel (or Blödel), François Gaultier, A. Benoit Gobert, Jumeau, Pintel & Godchaux, Rabery & Delphieu (Genty), Frédéric Remignard and Arthur Wertheimer. In 1899 the following French doll makers formed an alliance named SFBJ Later P. H. Schmitz, Danel & Cie (as part of Jumeau) and Jullian joined, around 1925 SFBJ handled the dolls of Béatrice Mallet and Jean Ray. Each of the doll makers continued to make the same brand of dolls under the umbrella name of SFBJ. This stands in contrast with the Made in Germany mark.
This piece is in good condition and there is no serious damage visible in the images provided.
A fair market estimation would be between 150 to 250 USD.
This estimate is based on actual recent past recorded auction sales of comparable items. Retail "asking prices" can be higher and may vary.

With kind regards,
Georg

I have added two photos. One of the mark and the other of a piece of paper found with the doll.

Dear Diane,

Thank you for your precious help. Sadly the images are blurred. Can we have a second try and can I ask you to make new detailed and focused images of the letter and the hallmark. Thank you very much.

With kind regards,
Georg

Hi Georg,
Sorry about the blurred images. My phone would not communicate with my computer that day and I had to do it in a weird way. Hopefully these will be better for you. I deleted the 2 blurry photos. Thank you for your time on this.
