What does this mean?

Hi Tracey,

Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
Is this impressed with marks that identify the date? The only mark I can see is a part of the beehive mark that is obscured by the ormolu mount.

Thanks to confirm,
Delia

The only other impression I can see is an 08 or 80 not sure which way is correct. It’s in the same pic that shows the shield. Not even sure if that has to do with a date. There is a small letter hidden by the metal bar near one of the screwlike attachments on the bottom that looks like an F.

Also was told this was from late 1700s but really don’t know to believe that!

These can be tricky but with a "real" Du Paquier piece the value could be significant so it's important to be accurate in my assessment. I still can't see where the 08/80 mark is in the photo with the mark. If you consider the bottom of the centerpiece to be a clock and the blue beehive mark is at the center where the hands are, where is the impressed mark in relation to it?

Tracey reese Jan 14, 13:18 UTC

It would be approx 2. If you zoom in on the picture which shows the entire bottom of piece, its approx 1.5 inches to right of beehive mark. I will attach another pic.

That's helpful, Tracey, thanks!
The "F" mark looks more like a loss than an actual mark. I'm not convinced this is old DuPaquier and the blue beehive mark was used by Royal Vienna porcelain so if it's OK with you, I'd like to share a couple of these photos with a friend who specializes in European porcelains to see if she agrees with me or if she thinks this is right. It may take some additional time but in this case I think it's worth the second opinion (for which there is no additional charge to you). I need your OK to share photos outside Mearto. Let me know?

Yes please do. Thank you.

Good morning, Tracey,
My friend responded overnight and I'm sorry to say that she agrees with my assessment that this is not very old (early 20th Century) and is not DuPaquier but Royal Vienna. A soft market for this stuff at the moment. If it went to auction, it would be catalogued as:

An antique Royal Vienna hand-painted and ormolu-mounted centerpiece bowl
early 20th Century, possibly 1908
8 1/2 inches tall by 14 inches wide by 8 1/4 inches deep
Mounted with an ormolu rim, foot, and masque-form handles, the burgundy body augmented with a cobalt banding depicting oval medallions on either side, one featuring Venus and cupids, the other featuring a cupid, marked underneath with a blue beehive mark and impressed "08".
Acquired from an antique dealer
$250-350*
*represents a fair-market value for auction purposes; retail or asking price may vary.

Ok disappointed of course! But appreciate your time researching for me. Thank you so much.
