What does this mean?

Puzzling object, please answer my appraisal if you feel we can deeper into the matter.
I believe its porcelain, I see white structure underneath the gilding. Porcelain has indeed a high sound when tapped. It looks like a a piece of tableware to serve cookies or chocolate. Its english for sure but I do not know what factory made it. Its from around 1950. Decoration is influenced by Japanese porcelain like Imari and Kutani but is clearly different from that and is very European. A lot of European art, porcelain and other objects are influenced by Japanese and Chinese art from the 17th / 18th ( Delftware ) up to this day because of old trade routes going back centuries. Your basket is handpainted and thats more expensive to make then a lot f printed porcelain you can buy. The basket is still not an antique but attractive as a decorative object. My estimation is based on those criteria.

Thank you for replying I have taken some more pictures showing "England" that is the only marking on the plate, hoping this is more helpful to Identify my Item , Regards Barb Allen .

Thank you for all that information on my Dish, I believed it to be Older than that as my Grandmother had it quite a while and was previously owned by her very Old Uncle I was about 6yrs Old he was 90 then, I am 74, anyway it does sound like Metal, a number of people have been interested in it over the 50 years I have had it, but no one has yet to Identify the Maker, thanks Simon, unfortunately my 2 Children have no interest in my Beautiful Old Pieces, I also have a "Orphelia" Ornament "Royal Doulton" from which this piece come with. A shame that the younger people don't appreciate these Lovely Pieces, thank you anyway, Regards Barb Allen.

Dear Barb,

I know its a global thing. Here in Holland were I live we have the same situation. Young people under 40 are not interested in antiques or collecting things.
Are you sure it is metal ? I would love to have some pictures showing that somehow. You think its enamel on metal ?
Never heard of enameled pieces with handpainted gilding on it.. It is possible its a little older say 1940ties but I really do not believe its 19th century. I am still wondering so if you could send additional pictures I would love to do some extra research.

Simon
