Description

I believe it's walnut. Came over with my Dad's family from Norway. Sat in a shed on my Uncle's farm before my Dad rescued it and had upholstered. My Dad was so unsatisfied with the upholstery job that he gave it to me and my wife shortly after we were married 41 years ago. Estimate it is 150 to 200 years old. Very nice piece of furniture. We are retiring and down sizing. Have no one to give it to and no room in our retirement home.

What does this mean?

Although this may have traveled from Norway at some time in its life, this is an American, late 19th century, Victorian era walnut settee from just about 1885 that is done in the Eastlake style with Aesthetic Movement decorative motifs. This would have originally come with a matching set of chairs, one for men and the other for ladies. These were popular furniture parlour sets in homes at that time. The Victorian furniture market is currently slumped. Pieces, even the original period pieces, do not sell for what they used to sell for a few decades ago. The market was further impacted by the Recession. The estimate is based on actual recent past recorded auction sales of comparables. Retail 'asking prices' can be higher and vary.
