Description

Gustav Baumann 97 of 125

Provenance

I bought it at a garage sale in York PA. The woman said it may be worth something. I have treasured it. I move next week to a home in Lancaster PA. I’m at a point in life where my children aren’t interested in it and I can get by with a good copy. It is time to share it.

Dear Christie,

Thank you for contacting us with your inquiry.

Here is a description of the work you own:
‘Morning Sun’, signed in pencil lower right: Gustave Baumann with the artist's hand-in-heart motif, titled in pencil lower left, numbered in pencil at the edge of the image lower right: 97/ 125, color woodcut on paper. Dimensions of the paper: 12.75'' x 11.5''.

Gustave Baumann (1881 –1971) was an American printmaker and painter, and one of the leading figures of the color woodcut revival in America. His works have been exhibited all around the country including the Met in New York, the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC, and the New Mexico Museum of Art.

Today, prices for Baumann prints are high. Some are on sale for around $5,000, and many more can be found in the $7,500–15,000 range.
The estimate for your work is around $ 8,000-12,000 and has been based on the artist's current auction market for these last five years and the rarity of your item.

Please note that retail “asking prices” can be higher and vary.

Best regards,

Karine

I am not totally committed to selling it at auction. I am still moving and it is chaotic. I will be selling it. I am just am undecided as to the best option. I am nearing 80. My grandson who is now visiting and was with me when I bought this near 20 years ago at a garage sale. He is excited to see it’s value. But he is not in need of having the original on his wall.
