Moriage Nippon Vase with Birds
09 June 2018
Description

Found while cleaning out my in-laws house. Profusely decorated with a background of rolling mountains and trees, displaying an early morning sunrise. Enlarged birds and lakeside bulrushes are elegantly sculpted in high relief detail, the handles and mouth rim as well as the bulrushes are dotted with jewel-like beads, and colors of chocolate, salmon pink, orange, and yellow. Measures aproximately 5 inches wide and 5 - 5 1/2 inches tall.

Provenance

My husband remembers it as a child and believes it came from his grandparents.

What does this mean?

Dear Cheryl,

Greetings and thank you for calling upon the experts at Mearto to evaluate this lovely and early Nippon Moriage-ware, three footed, double handled vase decorated with birds and bands of stylized cracked-ice.

Not all Nippon is created equal and this is an excellent example of one of the best. While your detail shots are superb, it's tricky to see the back-stamp clearly but from where I sit this looks like the earliest back-stamp which features the 'Komaru' (or as it is more recently known the 'Maruki') symbol, circa 1910.

While small in stature, it is complex in shape and decoration and at auction, properly cataloged, you could expect this piece to sell in the range of $350USD - $450USD and perhaps even a little more as larger examples with the similar decoration and age have sold in the range of $650USD.

Please let me know if you have any follow-up questions and thank you.

Sincerely,

Erin--Marie
