Map by Willem Blaeu entitled Monomania.
06 March 2018
Description

Willem Blaeu/ Monomania, Hibernate Mount et Wan; Anglice Mounster
Amsterdam, 1654/52.4 cm x 41.6 cm (20.6” x 16.4”)/Copper engraving/Original outline colour/Latin text on the verso. A map of Munster, one of a series of four provincial maps of Ireland taken from Vol. V of Joan Blaeu’s Atlas Novus, published in 1654. Unsigned. From the first state of the plate; ships were added to the sea in the second state used in the Atlas Maior in 1662 (Bonar Law, 1997, p. 36). A map of the whole of Ireland signed Guiljelmum Blaeu in the bottom left-hand corner. Printed from the plate engraved for the two-volume Atlas Novus, first published by him and his son Joan in 1635. Unsigned. This example is from the first state of the plate; four ships were added to the sea in the second state, used in the Atlas Maior in 1662 (Bonar Law, 1997, p. 36). Here the strong impression shows little wear on the plate, indicating that this is an early issue.

What does this mean?

Dear Ivan - Stunning map and my estimate is based upon the assumption that this example has not been mounted to the backing board.

This early edition map by Blaeu does come up on the auction market occasionally, comparable examples are usually offered as group lots of 4-6 from the same edition and geographical area. When these group lots are broken down into individual items the average price for one is between $500 - $600USD.

If you have any additional questions about this, do ask and thank you for submitting to Mearto.

Sincerely - Erin-Marie

Erin-Maria,
This appraisal appears to apply to the map shown here but the title, description and provenance apply to another of my maps appraised separately by Mearto (on March 5 labelled 00:29 UTC). Please substitute the correct information and resend me the appraisal. The information should now read: Map by Willem Blaeu entitled Monomania. Willem Blaeu/

Dear Ivan,

I think that perhaps I didn't understand your question so bear with me while I try to understand. From your previous message, the estimate I have given and the image relate to one another (which is, from my recollection what I relied upon for research) but the description and provenance you originally entered did not (which makes sense as you referred to the image as being uncolored, the image is clearly hand-colored). I had assumed that what you would like is for the description and provenance to be updated with the information you submitted March 10 and sent a note to the Mearto admin to assist me with this as I am unable to alter your text but admin can. I do see this hasn't been done yet. If you will confirm with me that I properly understand your request, I will follow-up with admin and make this request again on your behalf. If my understanding is incorrect, please have patience and explain again what you require and I am more than happy to comply.

Sincerely,

Erin-Marie

Dear Erin-Marie,
You have understood my request correctly. I did to edit my original submission without success. If your Admin can't do it I can resubmit.
Thanks
Ivan
