What does this mean?

Hi Ruth,

Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
I've looked in all of my books on Limoges porcelain and there does not appear to be a specific date range for that particular mark; all sources ascribe to early 20th Century, so likely from 1900-1925.
Based on the photos and information provided, and subject to examination, this is:

A Limoges style parcel gilt porcelain double-handled square tray
made in Limoges, France, early 20th Century
Centering a square panel with floral decoration within a sky-blue border, two handles, with gilt accents overall, marked underneath *Limoges/FRANCE*
12 1/2" x 14" wide (handle to handle); 1/2" tall
CONDITION: appears to be in good condition
$50-75*
*represents a fair-market value for auction purposes; retail or asking price may vary.

Please let us know if you have additional items to appraise, and thank you again for using Mearto.

is there a possibility that it's a fake?

Delia Jun 25, 11:35 UTC

It's possible. Difficult if not impossible to tell from the photos. If the flower decoration on the front is made up of very small dots (easier to see with a magnifying glass), then that would suggest transfer decoration and not hand-painting and more likely to be fake. Let me know if you see that and I'll revise the estimate, which assumes this is real.

Ruth mastropasqua Jun 25, 11:37 UTC

No dots or suggestion of hand painting. It's all under the glaze.

Delia Jun 25, 11:38 UTC

Is it possible to get a clear close-up photo of the floral decoration?

Ruth mastropasqua Jun 25, 11:39 UTC

It should let you add more photos. If it isn't, please email our customer service and ask them to attach the photos for you. They'll let me know when they've done it.

found it. done

I can see very small dots; this is transfer-decorated and while it may have been made in Limoges, France, was not made by the some of the best-known factory retailers, such as Bernardaud, Haviland & Co. and Royal Limoges. Technically not a fake, better referred to as "Limoges style" though the date is still OK. I'll amend the description and value.
