The appraised work is a silver-plated sculpture depicting a leopard chewing on a gold and copper-plated tree branch, executed by Mexican artist Enrique Jolly (1932-2000) for D’Argenta. The sculpture was created in an edition of 500 and the certificate that accompanies the subject work lists it as #248. Jolly was born in Acambaro and began working with clay and other sculptural materials at a young age. He studied with important artists like Don Louis Albarran y Pliego and with Don Angel Tarrac, both accomplished sculptors. Jolly exhibited his work throughout Mexico and abroad and also taught at several institutions including the National Autonomous University of Mexico.

The estimate provided is based on comparables recently offered and sold at auction. The artist currently has a limited secondary market, as very few examples of his work have come up for sale. The subject work’s size, composition, condition (based on photographs provided) as well as the artist’s overall auction market were taken into consideration when determining the estimate. In many cases, pricing for similar examples available on the primary (retail) market vary, and are often higher than secondary (auction) market examples.
