Large pink vase hand blown into metal
10 November 2020
Description

Artist unknown, I cannot read the signature (hoping you can). Signature is hand etched into the outer rim of the vase. Height approximately 10 inches, width at top 6 inches, width at bottom 5 and 1/2 inches. Medium-sized chip (.5 cm by .5cm) on vase rim, otherwise in excellent condition with no known defects or flaws. Appears to contain gold leaf throughout.

Provenance

This was owned by my stepfather prior to me, who was an avid art glass collector. This was appraised by a local antique appraiser in 2004 (chip was present then) for approximately 12,000 US dollars. It has been in our family for approximately 25 years, in my possession for 15 years.

What does this mean?

Hi Nicole,

Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
This is a lovely Art Deco vaseline glass vase but that's a hard signature to read - I'm sure if I had the piece in my hand I could rotate it to catch the light enough to read it. When you do that, what does it say?

Thanks to confirm,
Delia

There is a dramatic "F" with a triangle shape next to it (maybe an "O" ?), ,then a space, then "ELANE" with a dramatic "L" that underscores the "A" and the "N" (although the "N" is hard to read), then "NANCY" or "NANRY" with a dramatic "Y." I tried to take some pictures so that you could make it out, let me know if you want me to draw it on paper and send you the image. Thanks!

Thank you so much for the link and the transcription. I take Pinterest posts with a grain of salt only because there's no way to know if whomever is doing the post is knowledgeable or not but that seems pretty good. Yours would be cataloged as

A Louis Majorelle and Daum Freres "Verre de Jade" Vase
made in Nancy, France, circa 1918-1925
With wrought-iron mounts, the vase of squared section with flaring rim, gilt occlusions, the circular foot signed.
10 inches high, 6 inches diameter
CONDITION: small rim chip
PROVENANCE: inherited

I would also say that the retail/insurance value on this would be around $4,000. The market for this isn't what it used to be and auction houses that sell it tend to be pretty conservative. At the moment Art Deco is more highly sought-after than Art Nouveau, which yours is.
