Jamini Roy paintings of musicians x 3
27 December 2018
Description

I think it could be gouache on thick cardboard or wood about 2 foot height 1 foot length. I've seen one or two other examples like this and that's how the materials were described on the websites.

Provenance

My mother had them since the 1958s and she got them from her parents in the 1940s. The paintings were probably done in the 1920s or 1930s. She gave them to me a few years ago as she had other stuff on her walls she preferred. Unfortunately they are stored in a cupboard in India so I would have to bring them over from there, they're not immediately disposable to me. I am going again in April 2019.

Dear Arjun,

Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry. So that I may best assist you, can you please upload a few better images of the reverse side and details. You mentioned 3 paintings, but there are just images of 2 different paintings. Thank you.

With kind regards,
Georg

Hi Georg, thanks for getting back to me. Actually the paintings are in India and I am in Spain so I cannot upload more photos. I am returning to India in April for a visit and will take photos then and get back to you with these. Please let me know exactly what sort of pictures you are looking for. Yes, there are three paintings so I will fix that. Thanks and regards, Arjun

Dear Arjun,

I can do a preliminary appraisal on the base of these images. I need images of the front, of the reverse side and some details of the surface. Thank you.

With kind regards,
Georg

Hi Georg,
Unfortunately these are the only snaps I've got right now. So I clearly don't have enough for the appraisal. I'll take pictures of the back of all of them in April during my visit back. Also, what kind of details do you need of the surface? Do you want some close up shots or descriptions?
Sincerely,
Arjun

Finally, there may be restrictions about my moving the items out of India. They don't allow antiques to be exported. I understand that's defined in Indian law as an object over 100 years old. Probably these items are still safe for export as they are a little under 100 years but I'm not sure how I'll prove it to the customs authorities in India. You may have some comment for me on this. I'll also check with art dealers in Delhi.

Dear Arjun,

Usually, you need expertise made by an in India accepted and proven expert. Legal restrictions like these are made to protect Indian art but sadly I can´t help you with the juristical details. Do you have additional question or how can I help you?

With kind regards,
Georg

Hello George, no I have no further question right now. I'll follow up your suggestions. It might be best for me to sell them in India. Best regards, Arjun

Dear Arjun,

Nevertheless, we owe you an estimation. These are drawings with tempera on paper or board and the motifs fit to the work of Jamini ROY (1887-1972). The motifs are in the manner of traditional Indian paintings.
This piece is in good condition and there are no serious damages visible.
An estimation for artworks like these would be between 3000 to 6000 USD.
This appraisal does not work as an authentification and there are some forgeries of this artist on the market.
This estimation is based on actual recent past recorded auction sales of comparables. Retail "asking prices" can be higher and vary.

With best regards,
Georg

Many thanks Georg for your help and I understand and appreciate the qualifications you made. I have no reason to doubt the authenticity of the pictures as they have been in the family collection for such a long time but obviously they will have to be professionally assessed and authenticated. I will get them looked at by an art auction house in Delhi and pay for a written report. In the meantime, your kind estimate has given me an idea of the sort of price the pictures could fetch subject to full inspection and finding a suitable buyer. Sincere regards, Arjun Sen
