Female sculpture
29 July 2018
Description

She is approximately 5 feet and stands on a 1 inch thick marble base. She is hollowed out bronze weighing in a tad over 100 lbs. At the bottom of the statue is inscribed with what appears to be E Rovos (?) "1895" ... not so sure about the "R" in Rovos ? I don't know anymore about the piece.

Presumably not genuine

Thank you for submitting you item for appraisal. This appears to be a chinese pot metal statue depicting a vestal virgin, bearing an imitated Edouard DROUOT (1859-1945) signature. Possibly copied after a photo by an unknown chinese craftsman in the 1980s or later and blown up in size. Such decorative copies after european statues were popular in the last quarter of the 20th century, less so today. They sell for a few hundred at auction, depending on size and metal value. Due to the faked signature this has to be regarded a forgery.

Unfortunate that it is a forgery, but I learned a lot about the actual piece. Even though it's not genuine it is one of my favorite pieces. Thanks for the info Klaus, very interesting.
