Dual antique pistols
19 February 2020
Description

I inherited some antique firearms from my grandfather. I want to know the history and value on them. It comes in a wooden box and is a dual pistol set. It's got a family Crest and name on the box. Also the pistols are engraved and have a name that we cant make out on top of the barrel. They come with a little metal sack and 2 sticks which I take it are used to hold and gun powder and to stuff the guns. The Crest has a cross on the shield and a crown on the top of it.

Provenance

My grandfather is from Italy and his great grand father was in the Italian army. All I know.

What does this mean?

Dear Stephan,

Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry. So that I may best assist you, can you please have a look if there are hallmarks or guarantee stamps on the barrels or the metals parts of this pistol.

With kind regards,
Georg

What kind of mark or stamp would I be looking for? Is it a name or a symbol?

Stephan lopez Feb 23, 20:17 UTC

They both have this stamp on on one side of them

Dear Stephan,

Thank you for the additional images and your patience.
Regarding a technical issue, your images were not displayed. I very much ask for apologies for this delay.

The apprised object appears to be a pair of pistols with the fitting case. Both pistols have a percussion lock system and a fitting case with powder flasks. Such pistols are usually titled dueling pistols but such pistols usually don't have a notch and bead sighter. The barrel is etched with the name "Carlo Innocenzo Sertoli" who was probably a gunsmith in the second third of the 19th century in Italy. The case is marked as property of the armory of Victor Emmanuel II of Italy who reigns between 1861 to 1878. On the lock, we see a monogram under a crown that could be read a CIS and would be connected with the gunsmith.

This piece is in medium condition and there are no serious damages visible.
An estimation would be between 800 to 1600 USD.
This estimation is based on actual recent past recorded auction sales of comparables. Retail "asking prices" can be higher and vary.
With best regards,
Georg
