What does this mean?

Hi Julie,

Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
The problem with using eBay to gauge value is there is no oversight or vetting; people can ask whatever they want without knowing the correct fair-market value of things. EBay will rarely disclose the actual selling price and many people put high values on things expecting to be negotiated down.
If you'd like for your appraisal to include dimensions, which is customary, please forward in the comments section - at your convenience - the height, width and depth and I'll update this ASAP.
Based on the photos and information provided, and subject to examination, this is:

A pair of antique cast iron and wood garden benches
American or English, second half 19th Century
Each with scrolling ends with scrolling foliated ends and red-painted wooden backs/seats.
(DIMENSIONS)
CONDITION: red paint possibly later, minor weathering to ends
PROVENANCE: acquired with a home purchase
$1,500-2,500 each or $3,000-5,000 for the pair*
*represents a fair-market value for auction purposes; retail or asking price may vary.

Please let us know if you have additional items to appraise, and thank you again for using Mearto.

Okay, thank you! I will have my husband get measurements and I'll get back to you. Do you think I should clean it up and take better pictures?

Delia Jul 15, 12:35 UTC

If you want to sell it, it's always advisable to have the clearest photos possible. Otherwise we generally don't advise 'touching up' or cleaning too much because sometimes it can make something look not as old as it is, which can be a red flag to a potential buyer. The only other photo I would include would be a view showing the underside.
Does that help?

Julie cummings Jul 15, 12:39 UTC

Yes, it helps so much! I will get some pictures of the underside for you. Thank you so much!!

Delia Jul 15, 12:51 UTC

You're very welcome! IF it's possible to get one photo of the two benches together, that may also help. It occurred to me right after I hit SEND
