Buhkara Style Rug

Description

Per Mearto appraisal description: This is an Entirely Hand Knotted Bukhara Style Rug likely made in Iran or Pakistan. The piece likely dates back to the period from 1970 to 1990. The Bukhara design is actually a native design to Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan area with exceptions of the area where Turkman population exists. This pattern is often named as the Elephant’s Foot Bukhara pattern or Octagonal pattern. The piece's central area is characterised by octagonal shapes which are usually named as "Elephant’s foot" by the collectors, weavers and experts. This is an ancient symbol which might have been symbolizing sun as well but further comments exist. The piece can be identified likely as a Pkaistani interpretation because of the different colour palette of the piece in comparison to Turkmen pieces. The colours are more plale and composed of tones of white and gray as well as a pale tone of orange. Normaly on the Elephant’s foot pattern, the use of orange is more dominant and strong. The rug is not antique, we can see this easily by observing the well preserved surface as well as the fringes. What we call a "diamond pattern" is also present in the decoration, the diamond motifs were distributed along the pattern between Elephant’s foot motifs. The piece is not centrally decorated but rather decorated by duplicated motifs along the central area. The piece's motifs were knotted on an intense red base on the central are while on the border motifs were knotted on a white base. Borders are constructed geometrically and are quite thick. The knot type of the piece is quite similar to those of "Perpedil" pieces. The rug is knotted wool on cotton. The knot density is average for Bukhara pieces and the motifs are rendered clearly. The piece is in good condition without any visible problems. Entirely hand knotted. Dimensions: 9ft x 10ft (plus fringe). Provenance: The rugs were purchased from an estate sale at an historical mansion in Benicia, CA. Heavily decorated by traditional Bukhara patterns. (2 rugs available. $1000 each OBO). $1000
