A Japanese Amitābha Buddha statue (10 inches tall and 7 inches wide), depicting a seated Buddha in Dhyana Mudra of Contemplation in Siddhasana position (meditating) probably made out of brass. The Medicine Buddha, Bhaisajyaguru, known as Yakushi Nyorai in Japan, is portrayed seated upon a large lotus pedestal. The Buddha of Healing is dressed in voluminous robes that drape beautifully around his body. The neckline deeply scooped revealing a lotus flower in his broad chest.

There is no mark or signature that reference the artist, but this figure might belong to Circa 20th century. The sitting Buddha is the most common representation of the Buddha, which can represent teaching, meditation, or an attempt to reach enlightenment. Hand gestures or mudras are essential in determining what a sitting Buddha means. Buddha’s back of the right hand is rested on the palm of the right hand. It is seen that both the hands of Buddha are rested flat on the lap. The two thumbs join together forming a small triangle. This triangle symbolizes the unity of Buddha, Dharma and, Sangha. The eyes of the Meditation Buddha are half closed or are closed completely representing focused concentration. The statue is shaped somewhat like a triangle that represents stability. The pose of Meditation Statue is also known as Amitabha Buddha meaning “Boundless Light.”

Although the provenance and origins are unknown (inherited from grandmother), this piece is in overall fair condition with some marks visibles in the images provided. A fair market estimation would be between 400 to 1300 USD. This estimate is based on actual recent past recorded auction sales of comparable items. Retail "asking prices" can be higher and may vary.
