Brown vase with green leaves, yellow followers and stars, with two engravings on bottom
11 September 2020
Description

I have this pretty vase that has some engravings on the bottom. I was wondering if this is a Camille Naudot vase? I attached a lot of pictures. It looks like the engraving was engraved by hand. There are two spectate markings on the bottom. One looks like a long c with lines and the other an A with a curved line through it. Measurements: 10.5“HX6”W I would like to know what this is and what it’s worth. Thank you so much

What does this mean?

Hi Ashley,

Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
Stylistically, this vase looks like it could be by Camille Naudot but the mark - from what I can make of it - is not the one typically associated with his production. You've done a good job taking lots of photos but the glare makes reading the marks difficult. If you have a thin sheet of tracing or onionskin paper, could you do a pencil rubbing of the marks and take a photo of that so I can see it better? Or draw what they look like?
If that doesn't work, I can evaluate this as "in the manner of Camille Naudot" but it won't have the same value as a more closely attributed work (to either Naudot or the correct potter).
Many thanks in advance!
Delia

Delia,
I added some more pictures. I got some better ones of the bottom of the vase and also used the thin paper to get a transfer. I drew a few pics too, but I think the vase pics are much better now. Thank you!!!

This is really helpful.
Is it OK if I forward some of these photos to a friend who is an expert on Art Pottery to see if they can confirm a hunch I have about this? I need to get your OK to forward photos and also that it might take a bit longer (there's no additional cost to you, though it may take a bit longer than the 48-hour appraisal window).
Thanks to confirm,
Delia

Delia,
Yes of course you can send them to whoever you like! I am very grateful for your help!
Thank you,
Ashley

Dear Delia,
Just wanted to check and see if you heard anything about the vase? Thank you!

Good morning, Ashley,
I've just sent a follow up email. I hope to hear back soon and will let you know ASAP.
Talk soon!

Hi Ashley,
I heard back from my colleague; I'm afraid they haven't seen this mark, meaning that it was most likely made by an obscure potter who had a limited production that has flown under the radar of the market. It's not an uncommon occurance and the vase definitely has merit on its own, regardless of attribution. We have, however, ruled out any attribution to Camille Naudot.
Based on the photos and information provided, and subject to examination, this is:

An American Studio Art Pottery Vase
first quarter 20th century
Of baluster form, the brown-glazed body with pinched neck with incised star decoration, the body with incised stylized leaf decorations, with two marks underneath.
10 1/2 inches high, 6 inches diameter
PROVENANCE: acquired at Goodwill
$200-300*
*represents a fair-market value for auction purposes; retail or asking price may vary.

Thanks for your response. I know you said you had a hunch I just wondered if there was a certain artist you were thinking it was? I wish there was someone that could tell me who that was. I could find much on the internet about it. If you have any more info please let me know. Thanks.

I wondered if it was a version of the mark for Edgar Campden Aldermaston
My colleague said they are quite certain that it is not.
Of course, if you find something please let me know but in this case I feel we've done a pretty job of exhausting all leads, both archival and online.
Enjoy the rest of your weekend!
