Art Deco Novel Shelf
02 July 2020
Description

This shelf seems like it was part of another piece. It looks like maple, and it has a drawer that slides both ways through the piece. It seems like a deco piece but I am not sure. It measures 28 inches high by 10 inches deep by 22 inches wide.

What does this mean?

Hi Rhonda,

Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
This is probably more MidCentury Modern than Art Deco, though there were pieces made in the Art Deco period that had this shape, probably a bit more ornately decorated than yours. I think the wood is pine, not maple, but that doesn't matter so much in the value overall.
Are there any names or labels on this (perhaps inside the drawer, or on the bottom)? I'm drawing a blank on a maker attribution - which is fine, I can evaluate this as an unattributed piece - but if there IS a known maker, that's good to know.
I look forward to hearing from you at your convenience,
Delia

Hello Delia:
I went back over the item again and I did find something that resembles a stamp. But it is nothing I recognize. Do you? It definitely resembles a Hallmark or maybe just smeared ink. It is on the underside of the drawer. What do you think?
Thanks so much for your efforts. I took a wide shot and a close up.
Rhonda

Hi Rhonda,
I do think it's a stamp of some sort and not just a smear but I can't make it out and it doesn't look familiar. Erroring on the side of caution, I would catalog this as:
A MidCentury Modern Pine asymmetrical double-sided bookcase unit
American or European, mid 20th Century
possibly part of a larger unit, now lacking; with open back and single drawer that slides in both directions.
28 inches high by 22 inches wide by 10 inches deep
PROVENANCE: acquired at auction
$400-600*

Thank you, Delia. I wish I knew more. It has a story, but it is difficult to know what that is. I definitely imagine that it has companion pieces, "somewhere, out there."
