16 October 2020
Description

An antique gun with the markings of “elg” a “b” with a crown above it and several other markings we can not distinguish (all in pictures).

Provenance

No nothing of history. We inherited an estate a few years back and just recently found 5 old guns in the attic. So far, this is the only one with markings.

What does this mean?

Dear Steve,

Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.

The presented object appears to be a percussion lock rifle with proof stamps of Liege in Belgium. This rifle has probably a trapdoor loading mechanism. The city of Liege was a famous center of gunsmiths that exported its products to the whole world.
This piece is in bad condition and there is no serious damage visible in the images provided.
A fair market estimation would be between 200 to 500 USD.
This estimate is based on actual recent past recorded auction sales of comparable items. Retail "asking prices" can be higher and may vary.

With kind regards,
Georg
