Dear Kole,

Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry. So that I may best assist you, can you please upload a few better images of the signature. The quality of the depiction and the painting are a hint that this is an academic educated and talented artist.

With kind regards,
Georg

Hello Georg,
This paintings signature has proven to be very difficult to photograph. I have tried every kind of lighting and will try natural sunlight tomorrow... In these photos I wetted my thumb and tried to brighten the signature but there is a very thick layer of old varnish or lacquer.
I hope this helps.

Dear Kole,

Thank you for the additional images and your patience. I contacted some colleagues regarding the signature but sadly they could not read it too. I apologize for the delay of the appraisal. Bring this painting to a museum with a painting collection which is nearby. A trained eye should read this signature easily.

The presented object appears to be a painting made in oil paint on canvas with the measurements of 23” x 29.5”. The painting depicts a scene from a rural house. A mother in a costume that reminds of traditional Costumes of Southern Germany, Austria or Switzerland holds an apple for her child. The realistic manner to paint and the motif are common in Germany around 1850 to 1860 and especially in the Düsseldorf school of painting (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Düsseldorf_school_of_painting).
Sadly the signature is not readable on the base of images. I am sure this is a work of a known and established German artist of the middle of the 19th century
This piece is in good condition and there are no serious damages visible.
An estimation for this unidentified painting would be between 1.000 to 2.000 USD.
This estimation is based on actual recent past recorded auction sales of comparables. Retail "asking prices" can be higher and vary.

With kind regards,
Georg
