What does this mean?

Hi David,

Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
I do not recognize the calligraphy either but I've got a friend who I occasionally consult with about these kinds of signatures - do you mind if I send him a photo of the inscription to see what he says? It won't cost you additional but may take longer than the 48-hours so have to have your OK to do that.

Thanks to confirm,
Delia

Sure, that would be fine. Also, on a blog I posted to, several people thought that this was Iranian. One indicated Farsi. I don't know if they have any real knowledge. Thanks!

David

My friend is asking for a photo not quite so close up. Is that possible? the photo I sent them won't let them zoom out sufficiently...

Ok. I added a few more of the signature and then also a new picture of the entire rug. Let me know if that is what is needed.

Plenty of good photo options I'm sure at least one will work. Stay tuned....

My friend reads Farsi and several "dialects" of Arabic and he is mystified by what this says. It's usually the name of the weaver. It may be a more obscure dialect which, in the market place probably doesn't have tremendous bearing on value.

Based on the photos and information provided, and subject to examination, this would be catalogued as:

A vintage Middle Eastern hand-woven silk rug
In the Isphahan style, 20th Century (probably mid 20th Century)
Centering a sunburst medallion and lush stylized foliate decoration on a navy ground within a cream and blue border, with tasseled selvedges.
5'1" by 7'1" (61 by 85 inches)
CONDITION: appears to be in good condition
$500-800*
