What does this mean?

Hi Katherine,

Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry. So that I may best assist you, can you please advise on whether the decoration is on BOTH sides of this screen or just the one you've sent photos of? If it's on both sides, can you take a photograph of the other side?

Thanks!
Delia

I am very unimpressed that you didn’t read the description where I stated the back was just painted black. Hopefully you will note the detail and get it back to me asap

Apologies; I see that now.
The market currently brings a premium for full height (approx 5 feet or taller) screen with hardstone or mother-of-pearl inlay.
Based on the photographs and information provided, and subject to examination, this is:

A mid Nineteenth Century Chinese red and black lacquered wood six-fold floor short screen
single-sided, with black lacquer reverse
43 1/2 inches overall height; total width 60 inches
PROVENANCE: inherited from grandmother
CONDITION: crackelure throughout, consistent with age and environment. Client represents one bottom hinge needs repair/replacement.
$800-1,200*

Hmmm , was appraised at $4800 in 1995

Delia Jul 26, 01:35 UTC

Was that appraisal for insurance? The market has changed considerably in the past 25 years, with a general shift in preferences towards MidCentury Modern and vintage pieces, less so for more traditional antiques

Katherine cleaver Jul 26, 01:47 UTC

It was an appraisal for an estate...market value.

Delia Jul 26, 01:57 UTC

I cant speak to the reasoning behind that value at the time and follow the current auction market quite closely; the value at which I assessed your screen is in line with the estimates for comparable screens that have sold at auction recently.

Ok then
