What does this mean?

Good afternoon, Gail,
Thank you for submitting photographs to Mearto for appraisal.
Based on the photographs and information provided, you have an ebonized and stencil decorated ladderback armchair, probably New York or New Jersey, late 18th century; paint decoration is later. If the chair is examined and the rockers are determined to have been added later, or if the chair has significant restorations not visible in the photographs, the value would be lower than $700-1,000.
I hope the above information has been useful to you. Please let us know if you have additional questions, and thank you for using Mearto.

Thank you very much. Please note from the one photo which includes the rocking chair & a ladder back chair, (see paragraph #2) Anne Humphrey/James Ingraham lived in Barrington, R.I. & the chair was a Sept. 16, 1790 wedding gift. Therefore I'm not sure how you came up with NY or NJ . Also, the rockers were not added on later so will that change any of your remarks or value?

Please note that I am not selling this 1790 rocking chair, but I'm donating it to Schuyler-Hamilton House in Morristown, NJ.

Good afternoon, Gail,
The turnings on the stiles of this chair are very similar to those in NY and NJ, those turnings are found considerably less frequently in RI but had I known your family was from there I would certainly have attributed this to Rhode Island. These chairs are not terribly rare, nor sought after, so the $700-1,000 estimate is based on the rockers being original; the value also does not change based on where the chair was made.
