12 gauge shotgun
13 July 2021
Description

12 gauge side-by-side shotgun, approximately 34 inch barrels, overall length is 50 inches. The only markings I can find are engravings on both sides, "Chas Holloway." There is some pitting and rust on areas of the barrels, and the stock has some nicks and gouges. The trigger guard has a broken screw, but otherwise all parts seem to be accounted for. I purchased this shotgun in a lot of items, the seller stated it had "belonged to his grandfather." I have found reference to "Holloway & Naughton gun manufacturers but have been unable to find out anything about this gun.

What does this mean?

Dear Bettina,

Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry. My sincere apologies for the delay with the apprisal.

The presented object appears to be a 12 gauge SxS shotgun with 34-inch barrels and an overall length of around 50 inches. The lock is decorated with scrollwork decor and both sides of the lock are marked with "Chas Holloway". Additionally, we see a British proof mark which located and dates this shotgun to Birmingham between 1813 and 1904. There is no shotgun or comparable rifle mentioned in reference books or auction result databases which is marked "Chas Halloway". The company Holloway & Naughton is a known and established producer of high-quality shotguns but was founded later than the proof mark. George Percival Holloway (b.1871) and Sidney Leonard Holloway (b.1880) were the sons of George O'Connor Holloway (1846-1920) of Holloway & Co. which was sold to Ludlow England of Midland Gun Co in the year 1902. This shotgun was probably made by one of the two sons or the father when they worked not under the company name Holloway & Co. Sadly this question is not clearly solvable
This piece is in medium condition and there is no serious damage visible in the images provided.
A fair market estimation would be between 200 to 400 USD.
This estimate is based on actual recent past recorded auction sales of comparable items. Retail "asking prices" can be higher and may vary.

With kind regards,
George

Hello George,

I can find no other markings whatsoever on any of the metal parts. I have painstakingly gone over each area with a magnifying glass, and see nothing other than the faint scrollwork and the Chas Holloway inscription. A local firearms dealer has suggested that any numbers may be under the wood on a piece this old, but I wouldn't want to run the risk of breaking a pin or doing any damage, as I'm not an expert. I'm having a problem finding anyone local who could examine it in person and help shed some light on the mystery. Do you have any suggestions? Thank you very much for your help

Hello again. I found a local "cowboy action armorer" who is going to take a look and see if he can find any markings, he's looking at the shotgun this afternoon. I will let you know what we find out. Thank you

Hello, the gunsmith was able to remove the barrels from the gun, and we found a few marks. There are a few marks that are very worn; he thinks an acid wash may bring them out. I'm sending you a few more pictures of the proof marks we did find. He would be willing to do a thorough disassemble and check for more markings, which would run me about $500. Hopefully with these new markings that we found, you can tell me if a more thorough (and costly) investigation is warranted. Thank you very much.

If you can access the above link, please view the British proof mark with the crossed arrows, crown above and V below. In my research I found that George Holloway had roots to Birmingham, England. The proof mark I am referencing is a Birmingham England mark from 1813-1904. I will add a picture of the mark to the photos. Thank you

Hi George. Do I need to pay for another appraisal in order to continue? I was able to find some proof marks and added pictures to the original set I sent initially. Please let me know if you are able to find out anything on this gun. Thank you.
