Eero Aarnio valuations

Finnish interior designer Eero Aarnio is famous with his innovative and futuristic furniture designs in the 1960s, using then unconventional materials such as plastic and fiberglass. He was a pioneer in using these materials in industrial design. Plastic gave a limitless freedom to the designer to create any shape or colour he or she wanted, which resulted in fascinating designs that are both fun and functional.

“I began to design furniture, because a piece of furniture is the most important and most prominent product of an interior, and a chair is the most difficult and most fascinating this to design” says Aarnio, who studied at the Institute of Industrial Arts in Helsinki and started his own practice in 1962. In only 1 year, he introduced the “Ball Chair” (1963), a plastic sphere on a metal swiveling stand, open on one side for one person to sit within and upholstered with foam and fiberfill. Its material, fiberglass, and shape were completely off the beaten track for that time. Its original colors were white, red, black and orange. His other famous design is the similar Bubble Chair (1968) which was a clear sphere suspended from above. His Pastil Chair and Tomato Chair followed suit in innovativeness.

He was awarded the American Industrial Design Award in 1968. His designs echoed the 1960s pop culture and Pop Art and many of his works are included in prestigious museums around the world, including Victoria and Albert Museum in London and MoMA in New York. Aarnio continues to create new designs, including toys and furniture for children, such as his latest famous design Puppy (2005), a chair for kids or a sculpture for adults, whatever you would wish it to be.
